Highlights from the Freedom of Marriage Panel at the 2013 GA in Jerusalem

On November 11, 2013 experts, advocates, lawmakers, and Israeli citizens affected by Israel's restrictive marriage laws met with delegates from the Jewish Federation of North America's General Assembly in Jerusalem to discuss the need for change in Israel's religious establishment and the central role that Diaspora can take as a catalyst for such a move.

The panel was attended by hundreds of GA delegates from Israel and North America and was a crucial component of the convention which had a significant focus on issues of Jewish pluralism and freedom of marriage in Israel.

The presenters were:

-Susie Gelman, North American Co-Chair of the 2013 GA (moderator)

-Rabbi Uri Regev, CEO of Hiddush- Freedom of Religion for Israel

-Professor Ruth Halperin-Kaddari, Director of the Rackman Center for the Advancement of Women's Status

-Erin Kopelow and Ariel Beery, a couple who could not marry in Israel because Erin's mother had a Conservative conversion

-MK Nitzan Horowitz from the Meretz party and freedom of marriage advocate

-Rabbi Yitzchok Elefant, Chief Rabbi of Dimona
